Blog Assignment: Defining Distance Learning
Distance learning is gradually evolving and several of the challenges in the past are being resolved as technology advances. Prior to class, my idea of distance learning was acquiring knowledge without the need for the onsite presence required of traditional learning. As an e-learning developer for technical manuals, I have realised from my time in this class that it's not enough to make information accessible electronically but also be able to engage learners and give a near onsite experience. As I learned from readings and student discussions, interaction with instructors, having a social network with peers and fast response time from instructors defines what an effective distance learning is.
So if I were to redefine distance learning after my interaction and readings in class this week, it will be the platform that gives a near onsite learning experience without being physically present.
My vision is we use advancements in technology to resolve many of the challenges discussed. Examples include a robust video conferencing/messaging platforms for times online students can all get together and socialise (just like WhatsApp/facebook/Instagram) offers. This can help attenuate the zero physical interaction problem other students pointed out. Also as with the instructors attending to students, office online hours could be set for students via instant messaging so that there's better response time. A WhatsApp/slack/GroupMe forums that cater to specific course needs(eg homework help group etc) can serve to reduce the response time as peers can also help out friends that need it.
